Readline with a color prompt overwrites command line

I am having the same issue as this question and this one. Although I am not on Mac and I am using C++ not C. I am using Ubuntu 18.04. I've tried using the escape cahracter '\e' before the prompt string and using '\001' and '\002' but they all give the same results.
