What does the typedef in C++ means, and also i want to pass, and return it to a fucntion

I am having a trouble understand and code the typedef, i am trying to return an Letter grade such as "A","B", and so on. I passing it as a argument to a function, but when i am trying to return the gradeletter, i have to assign it to a variable, does someone know what it could be the reason
