what are c++ 11 type_trait and why were they created?

I understand that c++ 11 introduced type_trait. From my understanding type_trait are a way to bypass macros to produce better code more readable code with compile time opiminmizeation. What was the reason the standard introduce the so I can better understand how and when they should be used?
