Given the roots of a polynomial what can be the best way to get the coeffecients of the polynomial?

Alternately if you are familiar with MATLAB, then please tell me what is the algorithm behind the poly() function in MATLAB. The poly function takes the roots of polynomial as the input and returns its coeffecient.
