Are modern compilers actually better at optimization?

How much of a difference do modern compiler optimization techniques make? Do they actually provide a noticeable speedup?

For example: Are there any examples of C++11 code that will run faster with gcc 8.1, rather than gcc 4.9, or an even older compiler? How much is the speedup?
