How to write a 16bit per channel image in a file?

I have been developing an C++ application that downloads a grayscale 16bit per pixel image from a camera. Since most libraries that I know don't support 16bit per pixel, for storing images on a file, I would like to discover which is the most suited image format and library for loading and storing images with this feature.
